24-Bay Rack Server for Dense Storage

The Dell PowerEdge R740xd 24SFF fits 24 small-form-factor drives in a 2U chassis and ships with two Xeon Platinum 8160 processors at 2.1GHz plus 1TB of DDR4 ECC registered memory. A PERC H730P RAID controller and dual 1100W power supplies are installed, while remote management is handled by iDRAC9 Enterprise.

Suited to High-Capacity Internal Arrays

This configuration targets workloads that need many local SATA drives behind a hardware RAID controller, such as software-defined storage nodes, backup targets or media archives. Buyers who require pre-installed operating drives should evaluate other platforms because drives are not included and the installed controller uses SATA connectivity.

24 Drive Bays Define the Storage Ceiling

The chassis provides exactly 24 hot-plug 2.5-inch bays, so the maximum raw capacity is set by the number and size of drives you populate. No drives are installed from the factory, so the usable storage total depends entirely on the drives you add.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 2.5" drives into the 24-bay chassis and what step is commonly missed?

Slide each drive into a bay until the latch clicks, then configure the PERC H730P RAID controller before the operating system sees the volumes.

Which components will need replacement first during long-term operation?

The two 1100W power supplies and system fans are the primary field-replaceable units that wear out under continuous load.

What limit appears first when the dual Xeon Platinum 8160 processors run sustained workloads?

Thermal throttling engages once the 24-core CPUs hit their maximum junction temperature under prolonged 100% utilisation.
