The Dell PowerEdge R740xd is a 2U rack server built around twelve 3.5-inch drive bays, dual Xeon Gold 5118 processors and 256 GB of DDR4 ECC memory. A PERC H730P controller manages RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 across the installed twelve 4 TB enterprise SATA drives. Dual 750 W platinum supplies and iDRAC9 Enterprise provide redundant power and full remote management.

High-capacity archive workloads

This configuration suits environments that need maximum raw capacity in a 2U footprint such as software-defined storage clusters, backup repositories or media archives. The 7.2 K RPM SATA drives deliver sequential throughput but not low-latency IOPS, so databases or virtual desktop infrastructures demanding flash speed should look elsewhere. The two-socket limit also caps CPU expansion at the current twenty-four cores.

Twelve-bay 3.5-inch chassis
