The Dell PowerEdge R740xd is a 2U rackmount server built for storage-dense workloads. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 6130 processors, each running at 2.1 GHz with 16 cores, and 256 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across eight 32 GB modules. A PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache manages the 24 front-access 2.5-inch drive bays, which currently hold two 400 GB SATA SSDs. Dual 1100 W platinum power supplies, iDRAC9 Enterprise, quad-port networking with two 10 Gb SFP+ and two 1 GbE ports, plus rails and bezel complete the package.

PERC H730P RAID controller with 2 GB cache

The installed Dell PERC H730P controller provides 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA connectivity with battery-backed write cache and supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. This single component determines the RAID levels available, the maximum drive count the controller can address, and whether the existing 400 GB SSDs can be expanded with additional SAS or SATA drives without adding a second controller card.
