2U rack server with two 24-core Xeon 8160 processors, 256GB DDR4 and 24 hot-swap 400GB SATA SSDs on a PERC H730P controller
The Dell PowerEdge R740xd is a 2U rack server fitted with twenty-four 2.5-inch drive bays. Two Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors provide forty-eight cores at 2.10 GHz with 3.7 GHz turbo, while 256 GB of DDR4-2666 registered ECC memory fills eight of twenty-four slots. A PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache manages the twenty-four 400 GB SATA SSDs already installed.
This configuration targets software-defined storage clusters, virtual desktop infrastructure and service-provider workloads that benefit from high drive density in a compact chassis. It is not for buyers who need GPU acceleration, additional processor sockets beyond the two installed, or memory expansion past the 3 TB platform limit.
The single specification that determines fit is the pre-populated drive set: twenty-four enterprise 400 GB SATA 6 Gb/s SSDs behind a 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA RAID controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, 60 and pass-through. Buyers requiring a different capacity, interface or drive count should look at alternative chassis.

Other versions of this model
Open the controller BIOS or iDRAC9 Enterprise interface and verify that all 24 installed 400GB SATA SSDs appear as online members of the configured virtual disks.
The unit includes 2 Xeon 8160 processors, 256GB DDR4 2666MHz ECC memory in 8 modules, 24 Dell Enterprise 400GB SATA SSDs, PERC H730P 2GB controller, X520/I350 quad-port network card, iDRAC9 Enterprise, 2 redundant 1100W PSUs, rails and bezel.
This 2U chassis is fixed at 24 2.5-inch bays; memory can scale to 3TB across 24 DDR4 slots, so select the installed 256GB or add modules later depending on workload needs.
