The Dell PowerEdge R740xd is a 2U rack server built around twelve 3.5-inch drive bays and dual Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors. Each CPU delivers 24 cores at 2.1 GHz with a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. The system ships with 128 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across eight modules and a PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60.

Suits virtualised storage

This configuration targets software-defined storage, service-provider hosting and virtual desktop infrastructure where high drive count and dual-socket compute matter. Buyers who need GPU acceleration, single-socket economy or a smaller 1U footprint should look elsewhere, as the chassis does not support those requirements. The quad-port network daughter card provides two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ links for flexible connectivity.

Twelve 3.5-inch SAS/SATA bays define capacity

The server includes twelve hot-swap trays for 3.5-inch SAS or SATA drives but no drives are installed. Maximum raw capacity is therefore determined entirely by the drive sizes you populate.
