The Dell PowerEdge R740xd is a 2U rack server built for workloads that demand high drive density in a compact footprint. Two Intel Xeon Gold 6142 processors provide 32 total cores at 2.6 GHz, with turbo up to 3.7 GHz. The system ships with 768 GB of DDR4-2666 registered ECC memory across 24 slots. It targets software-defined storage, virtual desktop infrastructure and service-provider environments that need compute and capacity in one chassis.

24-bay 2.5-inch SAS/SATA backplane

The defining specification is the front-loading 24-bay backplane that accepts 2.5-inch SAS or SATA drives. A Dell PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode.
