Dense 2U storage server

The Dell PowerEdge R740xd fits twenty-four 2.5-inch drive bays into a 2U rack frame, targeting software-defined storage clusters, service-provider hosting and virtual desktop infrastructure. Two Intel Xeon Gold 6142 processors supply thirty-two cores at 2.6 GHz with 3.7 GHz turbo, while 512 GB of DDR4-2666 registered ECC memory fills sixteen slots. The PERC H730P controller manages RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 across SATA and SAS devices.

Build integration

Dual redundant 1100-watt platinum power supplies and hot-swap drive trays keep the chassis running during component changes. An Intel X520/I350 daughter card adds two 10 Gb SFP+ and two 1 GbE ports without consuming a PCIe slot. iDRAC 9 Enterprise provides out-of-band management for remote deployments. Ready Rails and a front bezel are included for immediate rack mounting.

Thermals and power

Redundant 1100-watt platinum units share the load, drawing only what the configured workload demands. The 2U airflow path directs front-to-rear cooling across both CPUs, memory risers and the dense drive cage. Fan speeds scale with inlet temperature and component utilisation, keeping acoustic output appropriate for data-centre aisles rather than office desks.
