A 2U rack server with dual Xeon Silver 4110 processors, 128GB DDR4 ECC memory, PERC H730P RAID controller, and twelve 4TB SATA drives for high-capacity storage workloads
The Dell PowerEdge R740xd is a 2U rack server built for capacity-heavy workloads. Two Intel Xeon Silver 4110 processors provide 16 cores at 2.1 GHz with 3.0 GHz turbo. The system includes 128 GB of DDR4 ECC memory across eight 16 GB modules. Twelve 3.5-inch drive bays come populated with 4 TB 7.2K SATA enterprise hard drives.
This configuration fits software-defined storage clusters, backup repositories and virtual desktop infrastructure where raw capacity matters more than latency. Buyers who need all-flash performance or GPU-accelerated compute should look at other platforms. The dual 750 W platinum power supplies and iDRAC9 Enterprise support continuous remote management. Quad-port networking with two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports handles moderate throughput.
The PERC H730P with 2 GB cache enables RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. Twelve SATA drives connect through this 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA controller, so the usable capacity and redundancy level depend entirely on the chosen RAID layout. Memory can scale to 3 TB across 24 DDR4 slots if the workload grows beyond the installed 128 GB.

Mount the supplied Ready Rails, slide the 2U chassis in and press until the quick-release latches click; the step often missed is fully engaging both side latches so the server cannot shift.
The 7.2K SATA drives are hot-swap; replace any failed unit without downtime. The H730P cache battery should be checked periodically and swapped when the controller reports degraded capacity.
With two 8-core 2.1 GHz processors the thermal ceiling is reached before the 3 TB memory maximum, so sustained loads are constrained by cooling headroom rather than memory capacity.
