26-Bay 3.5-Inch Rack Server for Dense Storage

This Dell PowerEdge R740xd2 is a 2U rackmount server built for data-intensive workloads that demand high storage density. Two Intel Xeon Platinum 8260 processors with 24 cores each run at 2.4 GHz with 3.9 GHz turbo. The system ships with 64 GB of DDR4 memory and twenty-six 8 TB 7.2K SATA drives managed by a PERC HBA330 controller.

Suits Archive and Analytics Workloads.

Organisations running software-defined storage, backup repositories or media archives will use the 26 drive bays and 10/25 Gb SFP28 networking. Buyers who need more than 1 TB of memory, additional PCIe slots beyond the OCP mezzanine, or GPU acceleration should evaluate alternative platforms because this chassis prioritises drive count over expansion.

The Deciding Spec Is Twenty-Six 3.5-Inch Drive

That density determines whether the server fits a cold-storage or analytics role. If the project requires fewer, faster drives or a different form factor, the R740xd2 is not the right choice.

Questions about this item

Does the server ship with all 26 drive bays populated, or must I buy additional 3.5" SATA drives separately?

The unit arrives with 26 installed 8 TB 7.2K SATA 3.5" drives, so no extra drives are required for a full configuration.

The listing shows two Xeon Platinum 8260 processors — is that the maximum CPU count for this R740xd2?

Yes, the chassis supports a maximum of two processors and both sockets are already occupied by the 24-core 2.4 GHz Platinum 8260 CPUs.

What does the installed 64 GB DDR4-2933 ECC memory mean for workloads that need more than 1 TB of RAM?

The server has 16 DIMM slots and a 1 TB maximum capacity, so the current 4 x 16 GB configuration leaves 12 slots open for future expansion.
