High-density 2U rack server with 26 × 8 TB SATA drives, dual 18-core Xeon Gold 6154 CPUs, 256 GB DDR4 ECC memory, HBA330 controller and redundant 1100 W power supplies
The Dell PowerEdge R740xd2 packs twenty-six 3.5-inch drive bays into a 2U rackmount chassis, delivering over two hundred terabytes of raw capacity. Dual Intel Xeon Gold 6154 processors provide thirty-six cores at 3.0 GHz with 3.7 GHz turbo for compute-heavy workloads. It targets organisations that need maximum storage density without expanding rack footprint.
The PERC HBA330 presents each 8 TB 7.2K SATA drive directly to the operating system, enabling software-defined storage stacks such as Ceph or ZFS to manage redundancy and tiering. Dual 10/25 Gb SFP28 ports on the Broadcom 57414 mezzanine card give high-throughput network paths for backup or analytics traffic. iDRAC 9 Enterprise provides full out-of-band lifecycle management.
The unit ships without ready rails or a front bezel, so rack mounting hardware must be sourced before installation. Twenty-six drive carriers populate the front; verifying carrier-to-backplane alignment during initial seating prevents bent pins. Dual 1100 W platinum power supplies require two PDU circuits for full redundancy.

The server supports up to 1TB of DDR4 memory across its 16 slots. Currently 256GB is installed in eight 32GB modules, leaving eight slots free for expansion.
The HBA330 controller provides 12Gb/s SAS/SATA connectivity, but the 7.2K RPM SATA drives and their 6Gb/s interface set the practical throughput ceiling for continuous write workloads.
Each 1100W Platinum supply delivers up to 1100 watts. With redundant hot-swap configuration, both units share the load, and total system draw depends on CPU utilisation and all 26 drives spinning simultaneously.
