High-density 2U storage server

The Dell PowerEdge R740xd2 is a 2U rack server built for data-intensive workloads that demand maximum 3.5-inch drive density. It ships with two Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors, each running at 2.1 GHz with a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency and 24 cores. The system includes 128 GB of DDR4-2666 ECC registered memory across 16 slots and a PERC H730P 2 GB SAS/SATA RAID controller with battery backup. Dual 1100 W platinum power supplies provide redundant hot-swap power.

Suited for software-defined storage and backup

This configuration fits organisations deploying software-defined storage, big data analytics, media archives or large backup repositories where raw 3.5-inch bay count is the priority. The 26 front-access trays and dual 10/25 Gb SFP28 mezzanine card support high-throughput ingest. Buyers who need drives pre-installed, a front bezel or ready rails included, or more than two processor sockets should look elsewhere.

26-bay 3.5-inch chassis decides fit

The single specification that determines suitability is the 26-bay 3.5-inch drive tray capacity in a 2U form factor. If the workload requires that density of SAS or SATA spindles or SSDs, this chassis matches; if the project needs fewer bays, 2.5-inch support, or installed storage out of the box, a different platform is required.

Questions about this item

How can I verify both Xeon Platinum 8160 processors are active and running at 2.1GHz with 3.7GHz turbo after installation?

Check the iDRAC 9 Enterprise interface or BIOS system information; both screens will show two CPUs, 24 cores each, base frequency 2.1GHz and turbo up to 3.7GHz.

Which items ship with the server and which components such as drives or rails must be purchased separately?

Included: 2x Xeon Platinum 8160 CPUs, 128GB DDR4-2666 ECC RDIMMs (8x 16GB), PERC H730P 2GB controller, 26x 3.5" drive trays, dual-port 1GbE LOM, Broadcom 57414 dual-port 10/25Gb SFP28 OCP 2.0 card, iDRAC 9 Enterprise, 2x 1100W PSUs. Not included: hard drives, front bezel, ready rails.

Should I choose the 26-bay 3.5" version or a different drive-count configuration for maximum raw capacity?

This unit is the 26-bay 3.5" model; it provides the highest 3.5" drive density available in the R740xd2 2U form factor.
