High-density 2U storage server

The Dell PowerEdge R740xd2 is a 2U rack server built for data-intensive workloads that demand maximum 3.5-inch drive capacity. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 6150 processors, each running at 2.7GHz with 3.7GHz turbo across 18 cores. The system includes 256GB of DDR4-2666 ECC registered memory across 16 slots, expandable to 1TB. A Dell PERC H330 controller manages the 26 front-access drive trays.

12Gb/s SAS/SATA controller ceiling

The integrated PERC H330 storage controller operates at 12Gb/s for both SAS and SATA drives. This interface speed sets the practical throughput limit for every drive installed in the 26 bays. The controller connects through a PCIe 3.0 pathway inside the chassis, so aggregate bandwidth across all 26 drives cannot exceed the controller link. Workloads that require sustained sequential throughput beyond this ceiling will be constrained by the H330 itself.

Verify rack depth and network uplinks

Before ordering, confirm your rack provides enough depth for a 2U chassis with front drive trays and rear cable management. The server includes a dual-port 1GbE LOM and a Broadcom 57414 dual-port 10/25Gb SFP28 OCP 2.0 mezzanine card; ensure your top-of-rack switches have compatible SFP28 ports and cabling. The two 1100W platinum power supplies require appropriate PDU outlets. Front bezel and ready rails are not included.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 256 GB DDR4 configuration or add more modules up to the 1 TB maximum?

The server ships with 256 GB across eight 32 GB DDR4-2666 modules and has 16 slots total, so you can add eight more modules later if the workload grows.

What does the 2.7 GHz base and 3.7 GHz turbo on the dual Xeon Gold 6150 CPUs mean for real-world throughput?

Two 18-core Gold 6150 processors give 36 cores at 2.7 GHz base clock, with turbo up to 3.7 GHz when thermal headroom allows, scaling performance for multi-threaded workloads.

How does the PERC H330 controller and the 10/25 Gb SFP28 OCP 2.0 card limit storage and network speed in practice?

The H330 provides 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA connectivity to the 26 drive bays, while the Broadcom 57414 mezzanine card caps network throughput at 25 Gb/s per port.
