A 2U rack server with dual 18-core Xeon Gold 6254 CPUs, 32GB DDR4, 26× 4TB SAS drives and a PERC H730P controller for high-density storage workloads
The Dell PowerEdge R740xd2 is a 2U rack server built for data-intensive workloads that demand maximum storage density. It ships with dual Intel Xeon Gold 6254 processors at 3.1GHz with 18 cores each, 32GB of DDR4-2933 ECC memory, and a PERC H730P controller managing 26 hot-swap 3.5-inch 4TB SAS drives. iDRAC 9 Enterprise and dual 1100W platinum power supplies are included.
This system replaces multiple lower-density servers or external JBODs by packing 26 drive bays into 2U of rack space. The jump is worth it when backup repositories, software-defined storage clusters, or media archives need raw capacity and SAS throughput without expanding the rack footprint. Dual 10/25Gb SFP28 ports on the Broadcom 57414 mezzanine card lift network bottlenecks that choke older 1GbE-only platforms.
Confirm the cabinet depth accommodates a 2U chassis with rear cable management for 26 drives and dual PSUs. Ensure the switch fabric supports 10/25Gb SFP28 connectivity to use the OCP 2.0 mezzanine card at line rate. Check that the operating environment meets the server's thermal and power requirements for continuous operation.

The server is a 2U rack-mount unit; mounting rails are not included and must be purchased separately to secure it in a standard rack.
After inserting each drive into the front bays, the PERC H730P RAID configuration utility must be run to initialise the virtual disks before the operating system sees usable storage.
The redundant 1100 W supplies are hot-swappable; replace a unit when its status LED shows a fault. The controller battery typically lasts several years and should be swapped when iDRAC 9 reports a degraded battery state.
