Four-socket Xeon server

The Dell PowerEdge R930 is a 4U rack server equipped with four Intel Xeon E7-8890 v4 processors, each running at 2.2 GHz with 24 cores. It ships with 1.5 TB of DDR4 registered ECC memory and a PERC H330 storage controller managing 24 installed 600 GB SAS hard drives. The system includes quad-port networking with two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ connections plus iDRAC8 Enterprise remote management.

Rail-mounted 4U chassis

The server arrives with ready rails and a front bezel for standard rack installation. Four hot-plug 1100 W power supplies provide redundancy and slide into the rear without tools. Drive bays and memory slots are accessible from the front and top respectively, though the 96 DIMM slots and four processor sockets mean full population requires careful sequencing. Weight and depth demand two-person handling or a lift.

Memory and storage limits

The platform supports up to 12 TB of DDR4 across 96 slots, so verify your module ranks and speeds match the 2400 MHz specification. The H330 controller handles RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 and 50 but does not support NVMe; the 24 installed SAS drives occupy all front bays. Network uplinks use SFP+ transceivers not included, and the Matrox G200 graphics provides only basic console output.

Questions about this item

How can I verify the four Xeon E7-8890 v4 processors are all detected and running at 2.2 GHz after installation?

During POST and in the iDRAC8 Enterprise interface, the System > Inventory > CPU view will list all four sockets populated with E7-8890 v4 units showing 2.2 GHz base speed and 3.4 GHz turbo capability.

Which components are included in the shipment and what must be sourced separately?

The server arrives with four E7-8890 v4 CPUs, 1.5 TB DDR4 (48 × 32 GB modules), PERC H330 controller, 24 × 600 GB 10K SAS drives, X520/I350 quad-port network daughter card, iDRAC8 Enterprise, four 1100 W 80+ Platinum PSUs, ReadyRails and front bezel. Operating system licences and any additional NVMe SSDs are not included.

Which memory capacity should I choose if I need room to grow beyond the factory 1.5 TB?

The chassis provides 96 DDR4 slots and supports up to 12 TB total; the current 1.5 TB configuration occupies 48 slots with 32 GB modules, leaving 48 free slots for future expansion with compatible DDR4 registered ECC DIMMs.
