Scalable quad-socket server

The Dell PowerEdge R930 is a 24-bay rack server built for heavy enterprise workloads. It ships with four Intel Xeon E7-8860 processors, each delivering 18 cores at 2.2 GHz with 45 MB cache. The system includes 128 GB of DDR4 2400 MHz registered memory across eight 16 GB modules. Twelve 600 GB 10K SAS drives provide 7.2 TB of raw storage in a 2.5-inch chassis.

RAID controller and remote management

A PERC H330 12 Gb/s RAID controller manages the internal drive array, freeing CPU cycles for application work. iDRAC8 Express gives administrators out-of-band access for deployment, monitoring and firmware updates without touching the console. A Broadcom 5720 quad-port 1 GbE daughtercard supplies four network links for production and management traffic. The DVD-ROM remains available for legacy media installs.

Redundant power and cooling

Redundant power supplies keep the server running if one unit fails or needs replacement. The 24-bay chassis directs airflow across the processors, memory and drive bays to maintain thermal stability under sustained load. Acoustic output is typical for a data-centre rack platform operating at full capacity. Power draw scales with the quad-socket configuration and twelve spinning drives.

Questions about this item

Does the PERC H330 RAID controller become the bottleneck under sustained disk I/O?

The PERC H330 12Gb/s controller manages all 12 x 600GB SAS drives and is the first limit reached during sustained I/O workloads.

What is the acoustic and thermal profile when the four Xeon E7-8860 CPUs run at full load continuously?

Redundant power supplies and multiple system fans maintain cooling; acoustic output rises with CPU load but remains within rack specifications.

Which rails or rack hardware must already be in place to mount this 24-bay 2.5-inch chassis?

Standard 19-inch square-hole or threaded rails compatible with the R930 24-bay depth are required for installation.
