The Dell PowerEdge R940 is a 3U rack server populated with four Intel Xeon Gold 6142 processors, each running at 2.6 GHz with 16 cores and a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. It ships with 768 GB of DDR4-2666 registered ECC memory across 24 modules and includes a PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache driving eight 1.2 TB 10K SAS drives. Dual 1600 W platinum power supplies, iDRAC 9 Enterprise, quad-port 1/10 GbE networking, rails and bezel complete the package.

Suits dense virtualisation and in-memory workloads

Organisations consolidating heavy virtual machines, large databases or real-time analytics onto a single 3U chassis will benefit from the 64 total cores and 6 TB maximum memory capacity. Buyers who need more than four processor sockets, direct GPU acceleration or storage interfaces beyond SAS and SATA should evaluate alternative platforms. The fixed 3U height and four-socket ceiling also limit future vertical scaling within the same enclosure.

6 TB DDR4 memory ceiling

The platform supports up to 6 TB of DDR4 across 48 DIMM slots, making maximum memory capacity the decisive specification for capacity planning. The current 768 GB configuration uses half the sockets, leaving headroom for growth without adding servers. If the target workload demands more than 6 TB of system memory, this architecture cannot meet the requirement.
