The Dell PowerEdge R940 is a 3U rack server populated with four Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors. Each CPU delivers 24 cores at 2.1 GHz with a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. The system ships with 128 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across eight modules. It targets organisations running heavy virtualisation, in-memory databases or high-performance analytics that demand maximum core count in a compact footprint.

Storage and networking practical limits

The onboard Dell PERC H730P controller manages the two installed 400 GB SATA SSDs and supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. The chassis provides eight 2.5-inch drive bays using a SATA interface; SAS drives are also supported by the controller. Network connectivity comes from a quad-port daughter card offering two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports. Remote management is handled by iDRAC 9 Enterprise.
