Dell PowerEdge R940 3U Server

The Dell PowerEdge R940 is a 3U rack-mount server system built for compute-intensive workloads. It ships with four Intel Xeon Gold 6148 processors, each delivering 20 cores at 2.4 GHz with a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. The system includes 512 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across 16 modules. Eight 2.4 TB 10K SAS hard drives connect through a PERC H730P 2 GB controller with battery-backed cache.

Four-Socket Compute Density and Memory Scalability

This platform suits organisations that need maximum processor density and large memory capacity in a 3U footprint. The Intel C620 chipset supports up to 6 TB of DDR4 across 48 DIMM slots, leaving 32 slots open for future expansion. Redundant 1600 W platinum power supplies and hot-swap drive bays support continuous operation. Buyers who require GPU acceleration, a smaller 1U or 2U form factor, or a single-socket platform should evaluate other systems.

PERC H730P RAID Controller With 2 GB Cache

The storage subsystem centres on the Dell PERC H730P controller, which provides 2 GB of battery-backed cache and supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. It manages the eight installed 2.4 TB 10K SAS drives at 12 Gb/s and can accommodate additional SAS or SATA devices in the 2.5-inch bays. This controller choice determines the RAID levels, cache protection and drive protocols available to the deployment.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 16 memory modules into the 48 DDR4 slots and which population rule do people miss?

Fill all 12 slots per processor in matched 32 GB pairs; the common error is leaving gaps or mixing capacities across the four sockets.

Which component will need replacement first and what capacity should I order?

The PERC H730P battery backs the 2 GB cache — plan to swap it every 3-5 years to keep write-back caching active.

What thermal or power limit appears first when all four Xeon Gold 6148 CPUs run at 3.7 GHz turbo continuously?

The dual 1600 W platinum supplies hit their combined ceiling before the CPUs reach sustained turbo, so clocks throttle to stay within the power budget.
