A barebone rack server with eight 2.5-inch drive backplanes and a CPU expansion board, supplied without processor, memory, storage, expansion cards or power supply for full customisation
The Dell PowerEdge R960 barebones unit provides an 8 x 2.5-inch drive backplane configuration in a rack-mount server frame. No processors, memory, storage drives, expansion cards or power supplies are installed, so every internal component can be chosen to match the workload. The included CPU expansion board adds extra processor sockets beyond the base board, increasing maximum CPU count for multi-socket deployments.
This chassis suits integrators and IT teams building a custom rack server where drive density and processor scalability are priorities. Buyers who need a complete, ready-to-run system with factory-installed CPUs, memory, drives or power supplies should look elsewhere, as every major subsystem must be sourced and fitted separately.
The processor sockets use the LGA 3647 interface, so only CPUs designed for that socket will fit. Selecting a processor with a different socket type will prevent installation and require a replacement board or chassis.

The eight 2.5-inch backplanes are fixed chassis components; a single drive failure only requires swapping that drive, not the backplane itself.
With no power supply or fans included, the thermal envelope is defined by the cooling solution and PSU you install, not by the barebone chassis.
The barebone unit has no fans or power supply, so acoustic output and heat dissipation depend entirely on the PSU, CPU coolers and chassis fans you add.
