Tower server for small-business workloads

The Dell PowerEdge T340 is a tower-format server built around an Intel Xeon E-2124 quad-core processor running at 3.3 GHz with a 4.3 GHz turbo frequency. It ships with 64 GB of DDR4 unbuffered memory in a 4 x 16 GB configuration and includes Microsoft Windows Server 2019 Standard. The system targets small businesses or remote offices needing a dedicated on-premises platform for file, print and light application serving.

Upgrade from aging tower or desktop hardware

This configuration replaces older tower servers or repurposed workstations that lack hot-plug drive bays, integrated hardware RAID or remote management. The eight 1 TB SATA SSDs are managed by a PERC S140 controller, providing RAID redundancy without a separate add-in card. The jump is worth it when uptime, drive serviceability and out-of-band administration via iDRAC9 Express become requirements.

Sustained operation with single cabled supply

Under continuous load the Xeon E-2124 maintains its turbo frequency within the thermal envelope of the 3.5-inch hot-plug chassis. The single cabled power supply delivers power to all eight drives, memory and the dual-port Broadcom 5720 1 Gb network interface without additional cables. Memory operates at 2666 MHz across four channels, supporting steady throughput for virtualisation hosts or database workloads that run for hours rather than minutes.

Questions about this item

What chassis size and drive bay type does the PowerEdge T340 use for its eight 1 TB SSDs?

The tower chassis accepts eight 3.5-inch hot-plug SATA drives, which is how the 8 TB array is physically installed.

How is the operating system deployed on this server, and what step is often missed during setup?

Windows Server 2019 Standard ships pre-installed; the step many administrators skip is completing the initial configuration wizard and licensing activation before putting the system into production.

Which components will likely need replacement first, and what are their specifications?

The single cabled power supply and the eight 1 TB SATA SSDs in RAID are the primary field-replaceable parts; memory uses 2666 MHz DDR4 unbuffered DIMMs if expansion or replacement is required.
