5U rack server with dual 16-core Xeon Gold 5218 processors at 2.3 GHz, 32 GB DDR4 ECC memory, HBA330 controller and sixteen 2.5-inch hot-swap bays
The Dell PowerEdge T440 is a 5U rack server equipped with two Intel Xeon Gold 5218 processors running at 2.3 GHz with a 3.9 GHz turbo frequency. Each CPU provides 16 cores, delivering 32 cores in total for multi-threaded workloads. It ships with 32 GB of DDR4-2400 ECC registered memory across four modules. The system targets virtualization, database hosting, and software-defined storage deployments.
Storage connectivity is handled by a Dell PERC HBA330 controller operating at 12 Gb/s for SAS and SATA drives. The controller presents drives to the operating system in HBA mode without hardware RAID abstraction. This suits environments that manage redundancy in software such as ZFS, Windows Storage Spaces, or VMware vSAN. Buyers needing a hardware RAID card with cache and battery backup will require a different controller.
The chassis provides sixteen 2.5-inch hot-swap drive bays, with eight trays included in this configuration. Memory can scale to 1 TB across sixteen DDR4 slots for larger virtual machine densities. Dual 750 W platinum power supplies deliver redundant hot-swap power for continuous operation. Workloads demanding GPU acceleration or more than two processors exceed the platform's supported limits.

Each processor can reach 3.9GHz turbo, but sustained all-core speeds depend on workload and thermal headroom inside the 5U chassis.
The controller provides 12Gb/s SAS and 6Gb/s SATA bandwidth shared across all populated bays; total throughput caps at the controller's eight-lane PCIe interface.
An optional Dell rack conversion kit is needed; the unit ships without ready rails or a front bezel.
