A 5U rack server with dual 16-core Xeon Gold 5218 processors at 2.3 GHz, 64 GB DDR4, H730P RAID controller and four 1.92 TB SATA SSDs
The Dell PowerEdge T440 is a 5U tower server that can be converted for rack mounting. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 5218 processors running at 2.3GHz with a 3.9GHz turbo frequency. The system includes 64GB of DDR4-2400 ECC registered memory across 16 available slots. A PERC H730P storage controller with 2GB cache manages the four installed 1.92TB SATA solid state drives. Dual 750W platinum power supplies provide redundancy.
This configuration suits organisations running VMware ESXi, Hyper-V or Proxmox VE virtualisation clusters, Microsoft SQL Server databases, file and print services, or software-defined storage workloads. The 16-bay 2.5-inch chassis allows extensive storage expansion using SAS, SATA or SSD media. iDRAC 9 Express enables remote management and lifecycle automation. Buyers needing GPU compute acceleration or more than two processor sockets should evaluate alternative platforms.
The motherboard supports a maximum of two processors and both sockets are already populated with 16-core Xeon Gold 5218 CPUs. No further CPU upgrades are possible without replacing the system board. Memory can be expanded to 1TB using the 12 remaining DDR4 slots. Storage capacity scales across 16 hot-swap bays with the H730P controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 modes.

The server occupies 5U of rack height; the front bezel and ready rails are not included.
Both LGA 3647 sockets are populated; the common oversight is skipping the firmware update after CPU installation.
The 2 GB cache battery typically lasts several years; replace it when iDRAC 9 reports a degraded or failed battery status.
