A 5U rack server with dual 12-core Xeon Silver 4214 processors at 2.2 GHz, 256 GB DDR4 ECC memory, a PERC H730P RAID controller, and four 960 GB SATA SSDs
The Dell PowerEdge T440 is a 5U rack server equipped with two Intel Xeon Silver 4214 processors running at 2.2 GHz with a 3.2 GHz turbo. Each CPU provides 12 cores, giving 24 threads total for multi-threaded workloads. The system ships with 256 GB of DDR4-2400 ECC registered memory across eight 32 GB modules. A PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache manages storage, and four 960 GB SATA SSDs are installed in the 16-bay 2.5-inch chassis.
Moving to dual Silver 4214 CPUs doubles the core count and memory channels compared with a single-processor configuration, which benefits virtualization density and database throughput. The H730P controller adds hardware RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 with battery-backed cache, a step up from software RAID or entry-level controllers. The jump is worthwhile when workloads need more than 12 cores, larger memory capacity, or redundant power in a 5U form factor.
Confirm the rack or cabinet accommodates a 5U server with sufficient depth for cable management and airflow. The unit includes two 750 W platinum hot-swap power supplies, so ensure PDU capacity and appropriate IEC connectors are available. The 16 front bays use 2.5-inch hot-swap caddies; check that any additional drives include compatible carriers. The front bezel and ready rails are not included, so plan for mounting hardware separately.

The chassis includes sixteen 2.5-inch hot-swap bays, so the four installed 960GB SATA SSDs occupy only a quarter of the available slots.
An optional Dell rack conversion kit is needed; the server ships without Ready Rails or a front bezel, so the kit must be sourced separately before installation.
The H730P uses a 2GB cache battery that typically lasts several years; plan to replace it when iDRAC 9 Express reports a degraded or failed battery status.
