Mobile workstation for professional workloads

The Dell Precision 5520 combines an Intel Core i7-7820HQ processor at 2.90 GHz with 8 GB DDR4 memory and a 256 GB SSD. An NVIDIA Quadro M1200 GPU provides 4 GB GDDR5 dedicated video memory for certified applications. The 15.6 inch FHD IPS anti-glare display runs at 1920 x 1080 resolution. Windows 10 Pro 64-bit is pre-installed.

Sustained performance under load

The quad-core CPU maintains 2.90 GHz base frequency during extended compute tasks while the Quadro M1200 delivers stable frame rates in CAD and 3D rendering workflows. Dual memory slots support up to 32 GB DDR4 for larger datasets. The M.2 PCIe NVMe slot and 2.5 inch bay allow storage expansion without opening the chassis. Thunderbolt 3 enables external GPU or storage enclosures for additional throughput.

Thermals, noise and power

The slim 0.450 inch profile houses a cooling system designed for mobile workstation duty cycles. Fan noise remains moderate during typical office and design workloads. The included power adapter supplies sufficient wattage for the CPU, discrete GPU and charging simultaneously. Battery life is guaranteed to hold a charge for mobile use. Weight measures 3.9300 pounds for transport between workspaces.

Questions about this item

How loud or hot does the i7-7820HQ get when the Precision 5520 runs all day?

The Intel Core i7-7820HQ at 2.90 GHz and the Quadro M1200 share a thin 0.450-inch chassis, so sustained loads will spin the fans audibly and warm the palm-rest area.

What must I already own to use the Thunderbolt 3 port on this Precision 5520?

You need a Thunderbolt 3 cable and a compatible dock, monitor or storage device; the port also carries USB 3.0 and DisplayPort signals for non-Thunderbolt gear.

Will my older USB 3.0 hard drive work with the two USB 3.0 PowerShare ports on this laptop?

Yes, the two USB 3.0 ports are backward-compatible and provide PowerShare charging even when the system is asleep or off.
