Dell Savvio 10K.4 600GB SAS drive

This new Dell Savvio 10K.4 is a 600GB 2.5-inch internal hard drive spinning at 10000RPM with a 6Gb/s SAS interface and 64MB cache. It ships with an R Series caddy for direct installation in compatible Dell servers or storage arrays. The lot contains ten drives.

Suited for SAS bays needing 10K speed

This drive fits servers and arrays that accept 2.5-inch SAS drives and require 10000RPM performance. Buyers needing larger capacity per bay or a different interface should look elsewhere. The 10.0-pound lot weight reflects ten units with caddies.

6Gb/s SAS interface decides compatibility

The single specification that determines fit is the 6Gb/s SAS interface; the system backplane or controller must support this exact protocol. Capacity of 600GB and 10000RPM speed follow from the interface choice.

Questions about this item

What throughput does the SAS 6Gb/s interface cap at in practice?

The 6Gb/s SAS link limits sustained transfers to roughly 600MB/s, so the 10000RPM platters and 64MB cache cannot push data faster than that ceiling.

What physical space and mounting hardware does the 2.5" drive require?

It fits a standard 2.5" bay and ships with the R Series caddy tray, so the drive slides directly into compatible Dell server sleds without extra brackets.

How is the drive installed, and which step is often missed?

Mount the drive into the supplied R Series caddy, insert the assembly into the hot-swap bay until the latch clicks, then verify the SAS connector seats fully — many forget that final firm push.
