Dell Constellation 1TB SAS Server Drive

This Dell Constellation drive is a 3.5 inch SAS hard disk built for server and storage-array workloads. It spins at 7200 RPM with a 128 MB cache and provides 1TB of capacity. The gold-labelled unit is supplied new and carries the DELL ES.3 product line designation.

Suited for SAS servers and arrays

The drive fits servers and RAID enclosures that accept a 3.5 inch SAS interface and can use a 7200 RPM mechanical disk. It is not suited for systems that lack a SAS backplane or controller, nor for builds requiring a 2.5 inch form factor or solid-state performance.

SAS interface decides compatibility

The single specification that determines fit is the SAS interface; the host must provide a compatible SAS port and 3.5 inch bay. Without a SAS connection the drive cannot be used, regardless of its 1TB capacity or 7200 RPM speed.

Questions about this item

How does the 7200 RPM speed affect server workloads?

The 7200 RPM spindle delivers consistent throughput for sequential reads and writes in RAID arrays or bulk-storage tiers.

What does the 6Gbps SAS interface limit in practice?

The 6Gbps SAS link caps maximum transfer rate at six gigabits per second and requires a compatible SAS controller or backplane.

Will this 3.5 inch drive fit a standard server bay?

The 3.5 inch form factor matches standard enterprise hot-swap trays and fixed 3.5 inch drive bays in Dell PowerEdge and similar chassis.
