Dell Constellation ES.3 1TB SAS drive

The Dell Constellation ES.3 ST1000NM0023 is a 3.5-inch internal hard drive with a 1TB capacity and 7200RPM spindle speed. It uses a SAS 6Gb/s interface and a 128MB buffer. Each unit ships new with a PowerEdge server caddy included.

Suited for PowerEdge arrays, not standalone PCs

This drive fits Dell PowerEdge servers including R310, R320, R410, R415, R420, R510, R515, R520, R610, R620, R710, R720, R720xd, T310, T320, T410, T420, T610, T620 and T710 models. It is not intended for desktop motherboards or external enclosures that lack native SAS support.

SAS 6Gb/s interface dictates controller choice

The single specification that decides compatibility is the SAS 6Gb/s interface. A matching SAS controller or backplane is required; the drive will not operate on interfaces that do not support this protocol.

Questions about this item

Will the 128MB cache on this SAS drive need any firmware updates or replacement over time?

The 128MB cache is built into the drive and requires no separate maintenance or replacement during normal operation.

What limit appears first when the ST1000NM0023 runs at 7200RPM continuously in a server array?

The 6Gb/s SAS interface bandwidth becomes the bottleneck before the mechanical 7200RPM platters reach their sustained throughput ceiling.

How much heat and power does a single 3.5" SAS drive draw when spinning all day in a PowerEdge chassis?

Each drive draws typical enterprise 3.5" SAS power and heat levels; the supplied caddy ensures proper airflow inside compatible PowerEdge servers.
