1.2 TB 10K SAS drive for servers

This new Dell ST1200MM0007 is a 1.2 TB internal hard drive spinning at 10000 RPM with a 64 MB buffer. It uses a 2.5 in SAS 6Gbps interface designed for enterprise storage arrays and server bays. The 68V42 part number identifies the Dell-qualified variant for supported systems.

Suits high-IOPS enterprise workloads

The 10000 RPM spindle and SAS interface serve databases, virtualization hosts and transaction-heavy applications that demand low latency. Buyers who need more capacity per drive or a different physical form factor should evaluate other options. The 1.0 pound weight fits standard 2.5 in drive trays.

6Gbps SAS interface decides compatibility

The drive connects only to controllers and backplanes that support 2.5 in SAS at 6Gbps. Verify that your RAID card, HBA or server chassis lists this exact interface before purchase. The 64 MB cache and 10000 RPM speed are secondary to the interface match.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 2.5in SAS drive in a 3.5in server bay, and what step is often missed?

Use a 2.5in-to-3.5in adapter tray and secure it with four screws; the step often missed is connecting both the SAS data and power cables to the backplane.

What maintenance or replacement will the ST1200MM0007 need over its service life?

The drive has no user-serviceable parts; plan to replace the unit once SMART attributes indicate wear or after the rated workload limit is reached.

What limit appears first during sustained writes on this 10000RPM SAS drive?

The 6Gbps SAS interface saturates before the 64MB cache or 10000RPM mechanics become the bottleneck during heavy sequential workloads.
