Dell 1.2TB 10K RPM SAS server drive

This Dell enterprise hard drive delivers 1.2TB of storage on a 2.5 inch form factor. It spins at 10000 RPM with a 64MB cache and uses a SAS interface. The unit is supplied new and intended for server environments.

Suits IT teams needing fast 2.5 inch SAS storage

Buyers who want more storage capacity or a different physical size should consider other options. Anyone building a home desktop or laptop will find the SAS interface incompatible with standard consumer motherboards. This drive targets enterprise server bays only.

SAS interface decides compatibility

The drive connects through a SAS port, so the host system must provide a matching controller or backplane. Without that interface the drive cannot be used, regardless of capacity or speed. Confirm the server accepts 2.5 inch SAS drives before ordering.

Questions about this item

How does the 10000 RPM spindle speed affect real-world server workloads?

The 10000 RPM rotation reduces latency for random read and write operations, which benefits database and virtualisation workloads that rely on fast small-block access.

What does the 6Gbps SAS interface mean for controller and backplane compatibility?

The drive uses a SAS interface that negotiates link speed with the host controller or backplane, so it will operate at the highest speed both ends support.

Will the 2.5 inch form factor fit standard hot-swap trays in a 1U rack server?

The 2.5 inch form factor matches the common hot-swap carrier width used in many 1U and 2U rack servers, but tray screw-hole alignment should be verified against the chassis manual.
