Dell EXOS 1.2TB SAS drive

This Dell EXOS ST1200MM0069 is a new 2.5in internal hard drive with a 1.2TB capacity. It spins at 10000RPM and uses a SAS 12Gbps interface with a 128MB buffer. The unit ships with a GEN14 caddy for installation in compatible bays.

Fits SAS backplanes with 2.5in bays

The drive connects to a 12Gbps SAS controller or backplane and requires a 2.5in drive bay. The included GEN14 caddy secures the unit in Dell GEN14 chassis without extra brackets. Its 2.5in form factor leaves larger 3.5in bays free for other storage configurations.

Suits high-IO server workloads

This drive suits administrators needing 10000RPM performance for transactional databases or virtualisation hosts. Buyers needing larger capacities for archival storage should consider higher-capacity drives. Systems without SAS infrastructure cannot use this drive.

Questions about this item

What limits sustained write performance on the ST1200MM0069 1.2TB 10000RPM SAS drive?

The 128MB buffer and 12Gbps SAS interface determine how long the drive can absorb bursts before the 10000RPM platters become the bottleneck.

How much heat and noise does the 2.5in SAS 12Gbps drive produce during all-day operation?

A 10000RPM 2.5in SAS drive generates measurable heat and audible seek noise under continuous use, so the enclosure must provide adequate airflow.

Which controller and caddy are required to install this 2.5in SAS 12Gbps drive?

A SAS 12Gbps HBA or RAID controller plus a 2.5in drive bay are needed; the included GEN14 tray fits Dell PowerEdge servers that accept that caddy.
