1.2 TB 10K SAS drive

The Dell ST1200MM0198 is a 1.2 TB enterprise hard drive spinning at 10000 RPM with a 12 Gbps SAS interface. It uses a 2.5 inch form factor and 512e sector formatting for compatibility with modern controllers. This new drive targets servers and storage arrays that need consistent throughput for mixed workloads.

Hot-swap 2.5 inch SAS bay

The drive fits a standard 2.5 inch hot-swap SAS bay and connects through a 12 Gbps SAS backplane or HBA. Its 512e emulation allows deployment on controllers that expect 512-byte logical sectors without reformatting. Hot-swap support lets administrators replace the unit without powering down the enclosure or disrupting adjacent drives.

Sustained 10K RPM throughput

At 10000 RPM the spindle maintains steady transfer rates during extended sequential reads and writes rather than throttling after a short burst. The SAS interface supports full-duplex command queuing so multiple I/O streams progress in parallel under heavy queue depths. This behaviour suits database logs, virtualization storage and other workloads that keep the drive busy for hours.

Questions about this item

How long can the ST1200MM0198 sustain 10000 RPM operation before thermal throttling?

The drive is rated for continuous 10000 RPM operation; thermal limits are managed by the enclosure cooling and SAS controller firmware.

What is the typical noise and power draw of the ST1200MM0198 during all-day 12 Gbps SAS workloads?

Expect enterprise-class acoustics and power draw consistent with a 2.5 inch 10000 RPM SAS drive; exact figures depend on workload and chassis airflow.

Which SAS controller or backplane must I already have to use the ST1200MM0198 1.2 TB 512e drive?

A 12 Gbps SAS HBA, RAID card or hot-swap backplane that supports 2.5 inch SAS drives and 512e sector format is required.
