Dell 1.2TB 10K SAS drive with tray

This new Dell enterprise hard drive delivers 1.2TB of storage in a 2.5-inch form factor. It spins at 10000RPM and connects via a 12Gb/s SAS interface with a 128MB cache. The package includes an R Series caddy tray for direct installation into compatible Dell server bays.

Suits servers needing fast SAS storage

This drive fits administrators expanding or repairing Dell PowerEdge arrays that accept 2.5-inch 12Gb/s SAS disks. The 10K spindle speed and 128MB buffer support transactional workloads and mixed read-write patterns. Systems limited to slower interfaces or larger 3.5-inch bays will not accommodate this unit.

12Gb/s SAS interface decides compatibility

The drive requires a backplane and controller that support 12Gb/s SAS signalling to function. Without that specific host connection the drive cannot communicate or transfer data. Verify the server or storage chassis provides native 12Gb/s SAS ports before purchasing.

Questions about this item

What real-world throughput does the 12 Gb/s SAS interface cap at?

The 12 Gb/s SAS link supports up to 12 Gb/s per lane, so sustained throughput is limited by the drive's 10000 RPM mechanics and 128 MB cache rather than the interface itself.

Which drive bays accept the included R Series tray?

The 2.5 inch form factor with the supplied R Series caddy fits Dell PowerEdge and Precision bays designed for 2.5 inch SAS drives using the same tray latch.

How is the drive installed in a hot-swap bay, and what step is often missed?

Slide the tray into the bay until the latch clicks, then verify the SAS and power connectors are fully seated; the common miss is not pressing the tray firmly enough to engage the latch.
