Dell PowerEdge 2TB SAS drive for server arrays

The Dell PowerEdge ST2000NM0001 is a 2TB 3.5-inch internal hard drive built for PowerEdge servers and storage arrays that require 6G SAS connectivity. It delivers 7200RPM spindle speed for consistent throughput in multi-drive RAID configurations. Buyers needing SATA-only backplanes or laptop 2.5-inch bays cannot use this drive.

6G SAS interface limits cable length

The 6G SAS link tops out at 6 Gbit/s per lane and relies on SAS expanders or direct-attached HBA ports rather than consumer SATA controllers. Cable runs beyond the SAS specification introduce signal degradation that the drive cannot compensate for. Systems without a 6G SAS HBA or backplane will not recognise the device.

Enterprise 3.5-inch tray mount with hot-swap carrier

The drive ships in a Dell 3.5-inch hot-swap carrier designed for tool-less insertion into PowerEdge drive bays. The carrier locks the SAS and power connectors into the backplane, reducing vibration and connection failures during continuous operation. Racks without Dell-compatible 3.5-inch hot-swap cages require a separate adapter tray.

Questions about this item

Is the ST2000NM0001 available in capacities other than 2TB?

The ST2000NM0001 is the 2TB model; other capacities carry different model numbers and are separate products.

What does 7200RPM mean for daily workloads on this drive?

The 7200RPM spindle speed supports responsive access to the 2TB capacity for desktop applications and bulk storage tasks.

How does the SAS 6G interface limit real-world transfer rates?

The 6G SAS link caps the interface at 6 Gb/s, so sustained throughput will not exceed that ceiling.
