Dell 146GB 10000RPM SAS drive

This 146GB 3.5 inch SAS hard drive spins at 10000RPM and includes a 16MB buffer. It ships new with a Dell PowerEdge hot-swap caddy for direct installation into supported server bays.

Suited for legacy PowerEdge servers

The drive fits the listed PowerEdge models including 1950, 2900, 2950, 2970, 6850, 6950, 840, 860, R200, R300, R900, R905, SC140, SC145, SC440, T100, T105 and T300. Buyers who need larger capacity or a newer interface should look elsewhere.

3Gb/s SAS interface is the deciding factor

The drive communicates over a 3Gb/s SAS link, so the host backplane or controller must support that exact speed. A system wired only for a different SAS signalling rate will not recognise the drive.

Questions about this item

What does the 3Gb/s SAS interface limit in practice?

The 3Gb/s SAS link caps real-world transfer at roughly 300 MB/s, well below faster backplanes.

What physical space and mounting does the ST3146755SS need?

It fits a standard 3.5-inch bay and ships with a Dell PowerEdge hot-swap caddy for tool-less mounting.

How is the drive installed and what step is often missed?

Slide the caddy into the server bay until the latch clicks; the SAS and power connections engage automatically.
