DELL 146GB 10000RPM SAS Enterprise Drive

This DELL ST3146755SS is a new 146GB 3.5-inch internal hard drive spinning at 10000RPM with a SAS 3Gb/s interface and 16MB cache. It is built for hot-swap server bays and storage arrays that require enterprise-class reliability.

Suits SAS Hot-Swap Bays, Not Non-Hot-Swap Systems

This drive suits administrators upgrading or repairing SAS-based servers and external enclosures that support hot-swapping. Builders whose chassis or controllers lack hot-swap backplanes or SAS connectivity should look at something else.

Deciding Spec: SAS 3Gb/s Hot-Swap Interface

The single specification that decides fitment is the 3.5-inch SAS 3Gb/s hot-swap interface. Your server or enclosure must provide a compatible SAS backplane and hot-swap carrier for this drive to function.

Questions about this item

How do I install the ST3146755SS in a 3.5" SAS hot-swap bay, and what step is often missed?

Slide the drive into the bay until the connector seats firmly, then lock the carrier lever; the step often missed is verifying the SAS backplane detects the drive before closing the chassis.

What maintenance or replacement will the ST3146755SS need over time?

The 10000RPM mechanical mechanism and 16MB cache are not serviceable; plan to replace the drive once SMART attributes show reallocated sectors or bearing noise appears.

What limit appears first on the ST3146755SS during sustained write workloads?

The 3Gb/s SAS interface caps sustained throughput, so the drive hits the bus ceiling before the 10000RPM platters or 16MB buffer become the bottleneck.
