Enterprise storage drive for server arrays

The DELL ST3450857SS is a 450GB SAS hard drive spinning at 15000 RPM with a 16 MB cache. It uses a 3.5 inch form factor for installation in compatible server chassis. This drive is built for enterprise environments that require high rotational speed.

Sustained throughput for heavy workloads

The 15000 RPM spindle maintains consistent data rates during extended read and write operations. A 16 MB cache helps smooth burst traffic without slowing under continuous load. The SAS interface supports 6Gbps signalling for reliable connectivity in multi-drive configurations.

Thermal and power profile in rack use

High spindle speed increases heat output compared to slower drives so adequate chassis airflow is required. Mechanical noise is noticeable in quiet rooms but typical for 15000 RPM enterprise units. Power draw scales with sustained activity and should be budgeted in dense arrays.

Questions about this item

How much heat and noise does the 15000 RPM Cheetah generate during continuous operation?

The 15000 RPM spindle speed and SAS interface indicate enterprise-grade performance; sustained use will produce more heat and acoustic output than slower desktop drives, so adequate chassis airflow is recommended.

What controller or backplane must my system provide for the SAS interface to function?

A 6 Gbps SAS host bus adapter, RAID controller, or server backplane with native SAS ports is required; the drive cannot connect to standard desktop motherboards without such hardware.

Will this 3.5 inch SAS drive fit and work in my older 3.5 inch drive bay and caddy?

The 3.5 inch form factor matches standard enterprise bays, but the bay must accept a SAS connector and the system must support SAS signalling; mechanical fit alone does not guarantee operation.
