Dell 500 GB 3.5" SATA Hard Drive

This Dell ST500DM009 is a 500 GB mechanical hard drive built for 3.5 inch drive bays. It spins at 7200 RPM and connects through a SATA interface with a 16 MB cache. The unit is supplied new and intended for internal storage expansion. It suits desktop workstations or servers that accept standard 3.5 inch SATA drives.

Suits users adding bulk storage to a desktop

Builders who need a simple, high-capacity magnetic drive for files, backups or secondary data will find this model appropriate. It is not for systems that only have 2.5 inch bays or M.2 slots. Buyers who want solid-state speed, higher capacities or a different physical format should look at other drive types.

Fits a standard 3.5 inch SATA bay

The drive requires a free 3.5 inch mounting position and a SATA data plus power connection from the host system. It frees up smaller or faster slots for boot drives or specialised add-in cards. No extra adapters are needed when the chassis and motherboard provide native 3.5 inch SATA support.

Questions about this item

Does this 3.5" SATA HDD need a drive bay and SATA power plus data cables inside a desktop chassis to operate?

Yes — the drive uses a standard 3.5" form factor with a SATA interface, so it requires an available 3.5" bay, a SATA data cable to the motherboard, and a SATA power connector from the PSU.

Will the 6Gb/s SATA interface on this 7200RPM drive work with an older motherboard that only supports 3Gb/s SATA?

The SATA interface is backward compatible; the drive will run at the 3Gb/s link speed of the older controller while still delivering its 7200RPM rotational speed and 16MB cache.

After installation, how can I confirm the 500GB capacity and 7200RPM speed are recognised by the system?

Check the BIOS or UEFI drive information screen — it should list the model ST500DM009, 500GB capacity, and 7200RPM rotation speed; Windows Disk Management or macOS Disk Utility will show the same details.
