  • 5 inch form factor fits standard bays

500 GB SAS hard drive for server storage

This 3.5-inch drive delivers 500 GB of capacity over a 6 Gb/s SAS interface. It spins at 7200 RPM with a 16 MB cache and ships new with an R Series caddy. The unit is built for internal server bays that require enterprise-class SAS connectivity.

Sustained throughput on 7200 RPM spindles

Sequential read and write speeds remain steady during long transfers because the rotational speed and SAS bus do not throttle under continuous load. The 16 MB buffer absorbs burst I/O without filling during extended writes. Performance scales predictably with queue depth on compatible controllers.

Typical thermals and power profile

The drive operates within standard 3.5-inch enterprise thermal limits when installed in a ventilated chassis. Acoustic output is consistent with 7200 RPM mechanics under normal seek activity. Power draw follows SAS 6 Gb/s specifications for a 500 GB nearline spindle.

Questions about this item

How much noise and heat does the ST500NM0001 produce during continuous operation?

The drive spins at 7200RPM with a 6Gb/s SAS interface; typical 3.5" enterprise drives at this speed emit moderate whir and warm to the touch under sustained load.

What host connector and caddy does the ST500NM0001 require to install in a server?

It needs a 3.5" SAS 6Gb/s backplane or HBA port and ships with the Dell R Series caddy for tool-less bay mounting.

Will the ST500NM0001 work alongside older 3Gb/s SAS drives on the same controller?

Yes, the 6Gb/s SAS interface negotiates down to 3Gb/s, so it can share a backplane or expander with legacy 3.5" SAS drives.
