  • 128 MB cache buffers bursts for smoother I/O
  • Includes Dell R-series caddy for direct server installation

Enterprise Storage Array Drive

This new Dell ST600MM0088 is a 2.5 inch SAS hard drive built for enterprise servers and storage arrays. Each unit ships with zero power-on hours and includes an R Series caddy for direct rack installation. The lot contains ten drives, simplifying large-scale deployments or RAID spares stocking.

High-Throughput Workloads Not Archival

The 10000 RPM spindle and 128 MB buffer suit databases, virtualisation hosts and transaction logging where consistent IOPS matter. Buyers who need maximum capacity per bay or silent desktop operation should look elsewhere. The SAS interface also requires a compatible controller or backplane.

12 Gb/s SAS Interface Decides Fit

The drive connects via a 12 Gb/s SAS port, so the host system must support that exact signalling rate and physical connector. Verify controller and backplane compatibility before purchase.

Questions about this item

What throughput does the SAS 12Gb/s interface cap at in practice?

The drive connects at 12Gb/s SAS, so real-world throughput is limited by that link speed and the 10000RPM mechanical latency.

Which drive bays accept this 2.5-inch SAS unit and its included tray?

It fits any 2.5-inch SAS bay; the supplied R Series caddy matches Dell PowerEdge R-series sleds.

How is the drive installed and what step do people miss?

Slide the drive into the caddy, secure the screws, then insert the assembly until the SAS connector seats firmly.
