8TB SAS drive for Dell servers

The DELL ST8000NM0185 is an 8TB 3.5" SAS internal hard drive spinning at 7.2K RPM with a 12Gb/s interface and 512MB buffer. It ships new with a Gen13 caddy for direct installation in compatible Dell PowerEdge and PowerVault systems.

Capacity and headroom

Eight terabytes provide ample space for bulk storage, archival workloads and nearline databases on supported 13G servers. The 7200RPL spindle and 12Gb/s SAS link deliver sustained throughput for sequential reads, while random I/O heavy workloads will saturate the mechanical latency limits.

Build integration

The drive requires a 3.5" SAS backplane and the supplied Gen13 caddy to fit Dell T130, T330, T440, T630, T640, R230, R330, R430, R530, R630, R730, R730xd, R830, R930, MD1200, MD1220, ME4012 or ME4024 chassis. It frees 2.5" bays for other devices and draws standard SAS power from the backplane.

Questions about this item

Will this 12Gb/s SAS drive negotiate down to 6Gb/s if my backplane only supports the older speed?

Yes, the 12Gb/s SAS interface is backward-compatible and will automatically run at 6Gb/s on a 6Gb/s backplane or controller.

Which LED or utility confirms the drive is spinning at 7200RPM and linked at 12Gb/s after installation?

The server's iDRAC or storage controller BIOS shows link speed and RPM; a steady green activity LED on the Gen13 caddy indicates normal operation.

Does the package include the Gen13 caddy shown in the title, or must I order a 3.5" SAS tray separately?

The Gen13 caddy is included so the drive fits directly into the listed Dell servers without an extra tray purchase.
