Enterprise SAS drive for PowerEdge servers

The Dell ST8000NM024B is an 8000 GB 3.5-inch hard drive with a 12 Gbps SAS interface spinning at 7.2K RPM. It is built for Dell PowerEdge servers and requires a compatible hot-swap tray specified at checkout.

Thermals noise and power in normal use

As a 7.2K RPM nearline SAS drive, it produces typical mechanical noise and heat levels for high-capacity enterprise storage. Power draw scales with the 12 Gbps interface activity and sustained sequential workloads in a server chassis.

Hot-swap tray compatibility and sticker note

The drive supports hot-swap installation but the tray sticker may not be included depending on stock. Supplying the correct Dell tray at checkout ensures proper fit, locking and airflow alignment inside the PowerEdge bay.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 3.5-inch SAS drive into a Dell PowerEdge server, and what step is often missed?

Slide the drive into the hot-swap bay until the carrier clicks; the step often missed is confirming the tray sticker is present so the server recognises the 8TB capacity.

What maintenance will the 7.2K SAS drive need during its service life?

No scheduled maintenance is required; monitor SMART attributes and replace the drive if reallocated sectors or seek errors appear.

What limit appears first when the 12Gbps SAS drive runs sustained workloads?

The 7.2K rpm spindle caps sustained throughput, so sequential transfers plateau at the mechanical media rate before the 12Gbps interface saturates.
