  • 5 inch small form factor fits dense server bays
  • SAS interface with hot-swap support for easy maintenance

Dell 1.2 TB SAS Enterprise Drive

This Dell ST91000640SS is a 2.5-inch small-form-factor hard drive built for enterprise servers and storage arrays. It spins at 7200 RPM and provides 1.2 TB of capacity over a SAS interface with a 64 MB cache.

Suits hot-swap bays; not for fixed-mount only

The drive includes hot-swap capability so it can be replaced without powering down compatible enclosures. Systems that lack hot-swap backplanes or that require a different physical mounting style will not be able to use this tray-mounted unit.

Single specification: 6 Gb/s SAS interface

The 6 Gb/s SAS connection determines whether the drive can communicate with your controller or backplane; verify that your hardware supports this exact interface before purchase.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 2.5-inch SAS drive into a server bay using the included tray?

Slide the drive into the tray until the connector seats, then insert the assembly into the hot-swap bay until the latch clicks; the SAS interface engages automatically.

Which component of the ST91000640SS is most likely to need replacement after extended operation?

The 7200RPM spindle motor and actuator bearings wear over time; plan to replace the entire drive once SMART reallocated-sector counts rise.

What performance limit appears first when the 1.2TB drive runs sustained write workloads?

The 6Gb/s SAS link and 64MB cache saturate before the platters, capping sustained throughput at the interface ceiling.
