Dell SAVVIO 146GB SAS Drive

This new Dell SAVVIO ST9146802SS is a 2.5-inch internal hard drive with a 146GB capacity. It spins at 10000RPM and connects via a 3Gbps SAS interface. A 16MB buffer handles burst transfers and the unit ships with an R Series caddy for installation.

Suits servers needing 10K SAS storage.

The 10000RPM spindle and SAS interface suit transaction-heavy server workloads where low latency matters. The 146GB limit rules out buyers who need more storage per drive bay. Desktop boards without a SAS controller cannot use this drive.

The 3Gbps SAS interface decides fit

A compatible SAS backplane or controller card running at 3Gbps is the single requirement. Without that specific interface the drive will not function, regardless of physical bay size or caddy inclusion.

Questions about this item

Will the 2.5" SAS drive with the included R Series caddy fit my server bay?

The drive uses a 2.5-inch SAS interface and ships with an R Series caddy, so it mounts directly into compatible Dell 2.5-inch hot-swap bays.

What is the correct way to seat the SAS connector when installing the drive in the caddy?

Slide the drive into the caddy until the SAS data and power connectors engage fully with the backplane, then secure the caddy latch; forcing the caddy before the connector seats can bend pins.

When should I consider replacing the 146GB 10000RPM SAS drive in a high-use array?

Monitor SMART reallocated-sector counts and rising seek-error rates; a sustained increase signals bearing or media wear and is the practical trigger to swap the drive.
