Dell 900 GB 10K SAS drive

This Dell ST9900805SS is a 900 GB internal hard drive with a 2.5 inch form factor. It connects through a SAS 6Gb/s interface and spins at 10000 RPM. The drive suits servers and storage arrays that need high-capacity, enterprise-class storage.

Thermals noise and power

The 10000 RPM spindle speed produces more heat and acoustic output than slower nearline drives. A server chassis with directed airflow is required to maintain safe operating temperatures. Power draw will be higher than low-RPM alternatives under sustained workloads.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 2.5" SAS 6Gb/s drive in a 3.5" bay?

Mount the drive in a 2.5"-to-3.5" adapter bracket, connect the SAS data and power cables, and ensure the backplane or controller detects the 900GB 10000 RPM unit before initialising the volume.

What maintenance or replacement will the 10000 RPM SAS drive need later?

Enterprise SAS drives are rated for continuous operation; plan to replace the 900GB unit after five years or when SMART attributes indicate wear, and keep a spare ST9900805SS on hand for rapid swap.
