Dell Enterprise SAS Drive

The Dell WD6001BKHG is a new 600GB internal hard drive spinning at 10000RPM with a 2.5 inch SAS 6Gb/s interface and 32MB cache. It is built for Dell PowerEdge servers requiring high-speed enterprise storage in a small form factor. The drive suits IT teams refreshing compatible rack or tower platforms with a proven spindle-based solution.

Server Upgrade Fit

This drive fits administrators maintaining the listed PowerEdge models such as the R610, R710, R720, T610 and M610 where a 2.5 inch SAS bay is available. Buyers whose chassis accept only 3.5 inch bays or who need a different interface cannot use this unit.

SAS 6Gb/s Interface

The single specification that decides compatibility is the 2.5 inch SAS 6Gb/s interface; the server backplane and controller must support this exact connection for the drive to function.

Questions about this item

What does the 6 Gb/s SAS interface cap at in real-world throughput?

The 6 Gb/s SAS link tops out around 600 MB/s, so sustained reads and writes on this 10 000 RPM drive will not exceed that ceiling.

What physical space and mounting does the 2.5-inch SAS drive need?

It fits a standard 2.5-inch hot-swap bay with SAS backplane connectors; the 1.0 lb unit slides in without adapters.

How is the drive installed in a PowerEdge server and what step is often missed?

Slide the carrier into the bay until the latch clicks, then verify the controller sees the 600 GB volume before initializing the array.
