Capacity and form factor

The Dell WXPCX is a 1.2TB internal hard drive with a 2.5 inch SFF form factor. It spins at 10000 RPM and uses a SAS 12Gb/s interface. This combination suits servers and storage arrays that need high-speed mechanical storage in a compact bay.

Who this suits and who it does not

The drive fits systems built for 2.5 inch SAS drives with 12Gb/s backplanes or controllers. Buyers who need larger capacities or a different physical size should look elsewhere. Systems without SAS infrastructure cannot use this drive.

Deciding specification

The SAS 12Gb/s interface is the single specification that determines compatibility. Your host controller or backplane must support SAS at 12Gb/s for the drive to operate.

Questions about this item

How loud and warm does the 10000 RPM 2.5" drive get during all-day operation?

The 10000 RPM spindle and SAS 12Gb/s interface are designed for continuous enterprise workloads; expect typical 2.5" enterprise noise and heat levels.

What controller or backplane must my system already have to use the SAS 12Gb/s interface?

A 12Gb/s SAS host bus adapter, RAID card, or server backplane with SAS ports is needed to connect the drive.

Will the 2.5" SFF form factor fit alongside the 3.5" drives I currently use?

The 2.5" SFF form factor requires a 2.5" bay or a 3.5" adapter tray; it will not mount directly in a standard 3.5" slot.
