DELL XX518 146GB SAS drive

The DELL XX518 is a 146GB 3.5-inch SAS hard drive spinning at 15K RPM with a 16MB cache and a 3.0Gbps interface. It ships mounted in a PowerEdge tray for direct installation into compatible Dell servers. The unit is supplied new.

Suits Dell PowerEdge bays needing 15K SAS

This drive fits administrators replacing a failed 146GB 15K SAS unit in a PowerEdge chassis that accepts the supplied tray. It is not for systems that require a different tray style or a capacity beyond 146GB. Buyers needing a 6Gbps SAS interface should look elsewhere.

3.0Gbps SAS interface decides compatibility

The single specification that determines fit is the 3.0Gbps SAS interface; the host backplane must support this exact signalling rate. A 6Gbps-only controller will not negotiate the required link speed. Verify the tray matches your server generation before ordering.

Questions about this item

Does this 3.5" SAS drive require a compatible SAS controller or backplane to operate?

Yes, the drive uses a SAS 3.0Gbps interface and needs a SAS-capable controller or backplane that supports 3.5-inch form factor drives.

Will the 15K RPM spindle speed cause issues if installed alongside slower drives in the same array?

The 15K RPM speed and 16MB cache are independent per drive; mixed speeds are supported by the controller, though the array will perform at the speed of the slowest member.

How can I verify the 146GB capacity and 15K RPM are recognised correctly after installation?

Check the BIOS or RAID utility for the reported capacity of 146GB and rotational speed of 15K, and run a SMART diagnostic to confirm the drive passes all self-tests.
