35/64" HSS Drill Bit with 3-Flat Shank

The Drill America KFD drill bit uses a 35/64 inch high-speed steel body and a 1/2 inch reduced shank with three flats for a secure chuck grip. A heavy-duty split point helps the bit start on contact and reduces walking across the workpiece. It is built for general-purpose drilling in metal, wood and plastic where a reduced-shank bit fits the tool. Decimal equivalent 5469 matches the nominal size for quick reference.

Practical limits of the 1/2 inch reduced-shank

The 1/2 inch shank diameter restricts use to drill presses and chucks that accept a half-inch capacity, so smaller portable drills with 3/8 inch chucks cannot hold this bit. The three-flat design prevents slippage under high torque but requires a three-jaw chuck that can clamp each flat evenly. Flute length of 3 inches and overall length of 6 inches set the maximum hole depth and reach, limiting deep-hole work beyond those dimensions.

Questions about this item

Is the 35/64" size the right choice for a 1/2" chuck?

Yes, the 35/64" bit has a reduced 1/2" shank that fits a 1/2" chuck while the cutting diameter is larger.

What does the 5469 decimal equivalent mean when drilling?

The 5469 decimal equivalent is the exact cutting diameter in inches, so the hole will be 0.5469" wide.
