Drill America 57/64in Cobalt Drill Bit

This Drill America accessory is a cobalt steel drill bit with a reduced shank design. It features a 57/64 inch cutting diameter and a decimal equivalent of .8906. The bit has a flute length of 3 and an overall length of 6. Bronze oxide surface treatment on the flutes helps reduce friction and wear during drilling operations.

Suited for large-hole drilling in tough metals

The reduced shank allows use with 1/2 inch chucks, making it compatible with standard drill presses and heavy-duty hand drills. Cobalt construction handles high temperatures when boring through stainless steel or cast iron. Buyers needing smaller diameters or bits for wood and plastic should look at other options. Those requiring a full 1/2 inch shank diameter will need a different tool.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 57/64in cobalt drill bit in a 1/2in chuck, and what step do people often get wrong?

Insert the reduced shank fully into the 1/2in chuck and tighten all three jaws evenly; the common mistake is not seating the shank completely, which causes run-out and premature wear on the bronze oxide flutes.

What maintenance or replacement will the 57/64in cobalt bit need after extended use?

The cobalt steel cutting edges will dull over time; resharpen using a cobalt-appropriate grinding wheel to restore the 3in flute geometry, and replace the bit once the flute length shortens beyond effective chip clearance.
