Both ends are male USB-C so installation is a simple push-fit. The cable is backward compatible with USB 3.1, 3.0 and 2.0, but the 20 Gbps rate and 4K 60 Hz output only appear when the host and display both support USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 and DisplayPort Alternate Mode. If either side lacks those features the link falls back to lower speeds or no video.
